Beyond Compliance

The ASA promotes a ‘beyond compliance’ approach to ship operations with regard to issues that have potential environmental and safety consequences.  ASA is committed to continually developing this approach with member companies while communicating to industry stakeholders the benefits of a flourishing domestic shipping industry and the achievements to date in terms of environmental sustainability.

ASA works with governments at the state and federal level to advise on the most practical and beneficial regulatory approaches to achieving environmental protection and management.  The scope of influence ASA exerts in these areas ranges from direct ship sourced pollutants during operation to the whole life cycle contribution of shipping, including ship recycling.  ASA involvement extends to the engagement of broad environment management issues such as the creation of marine parks and protected areas, including their location and the activities permitted within such areas.
