The Australian Shipowners Association established the Maritime Employers Database (MED).
Shipping companies, not confined to ASA membership, subscribing to the database are able to access contact details of qualified seafarers who have entered their name on the database as being available for work in the Australian seagoing, offshore oil and gas and towage industries. Shipping companies contact prospective employees directly in relation to possible offers of employment using the contact details provided by MED.
Seafarers can elect to be included in the MED to indicate that they are available to work by completing an application form available from the MED. To be entered on to the MED a seafarer must have a current medical certificate issued in accordance with Marine Orders Part 9. Also required is a certificate of proficiency or a certificate of rating issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
Once the seafarer has registered on the MED, their name remains active on the database until the MED is advised that they have accepted a position. To re-register the seafarer contacts the MED via the web or telephones the MED to advise that they are available for work and their name is reactivated.
The MED is simply a list of seafarers looking for work and amounts to a means by which seafarers can indicate their availability and employers can ascertain who is available peruse a 'mini CV' and make contact as they wish.

As part of the arrangements associated with the introduction of enterprise employment, the Maritime Employers' Database has been established. If you would like your name to be entered into the database to indicate that you are available for work in the industry, please complete the following application.
If you have not worked in the industry recently, and it is your intention to pursue employment as a seafarer, it will be necessary for you to pass a medical examination in accordance with Marine Orders Part 9.
A certificate of proficiency or a certificate of rating issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority is also required. It is also a requirement for all seafarers wishing to work on vessels subject to the Navigation Act (eg. interstate and foreign-going vessels) to ensure that they have upgraded or revalidated their existing certificates of competency to the new STCW 95 requirements that come into effect from 1 February 2002.
Shipping companies subscribing to the database can access via the web site contact details of seafarers who are listed on the database as being available for work in the industry. Shipping companies will contact prospective employees directly in relation to possible offers of employment. It may be beneficial for you to have a resume available.
It will be your responsibility to enter onto the website or telephone this office on 03-9681-9897 when you have accepted a job and also when you wish to make yourself available for work again. Once you have registered your availability, your name will remain active on the database until you advise us that you have accepted a position.
If you have any queries in relation to the operation of the database please contact this office.
